Why You Rehearse Conversations That Have Not Even Happened Yet

You are brushing your teeth, folding laundry, driving to work, standing in the shower, or trying to fall asleep like a normal person with a normal evening ahead of you, when suddenly your mind decides this is the perfect moment to stage a complete imaginary conversation with somebody who is not even there.

You know the one.

In your version, they say exactly the thing you secretly fear they might say, you respond with a sentence so calm, clear, clever, and emotionally mature that it deserves its own standing ovation, they finally understand your entire point, and somewhere in the distance a small orchestra begins playing because justice has been served and your communication skills have apparently reached championship level.

Then the imaginary conversation changes direction.

They become defensive.
