What Saturn represents in astrology

In astrology, Saturn represents structure, authority, boundaries, responsibility, maturity, discipline, endurance, limitation, consequences, patience, mastery, aging, time, and the long process of building something strong enough to survive pressure.

Saturn and Uranus make an interesting pair because Saturn says, “Let us create a structure that works,” while Uranus says, “That structure has become stale, unnecessarily restrictive, and frankly a little embarrassing, so I have brought a lightning bolt.”

Neither planet is automatically right or wrong, because sometimes you need stability and sometimes you need liberation, but Saturn reminds us that freedom without structure can become chaos, just as structure without freedom can become a prison with excellent filing systems.

Saturn governs the reality principle, which means it is less interested in what you hope might happen and more interested in what your choices, habits, boundaries, preparation, and willingness to take responsibility are actually producing.

This can make Saturn feel stern, particularly if another part of your chart would prefer life to run on intuition, enthusiasm, charm, emotional intensity, blind optimism, or the deeply questionable strategy of assuming everything will somehow sort itself out at the final possible moment.
