Mars in Cancer does not usually charge straight at a problem. It circles, protects, remembers, reacts and occasionally insists nothing is wrong while closing kitchen cupboards with enough force to communicate an entire legal argument.
This transit can create strong motivation around moving, renovating, protecting family, caring for children, creating security, dealing with property, strengthening emotional boundaries or finally confronting a private issue.
Cancer, Capricorn, Aries and Libra may feel this transit strongly because it activates the cardinal signs. Cancer may experience increased determination and physical energy, but also irritability. Capricorn may face more activity or tension in relationships. Aries may deal with home and family pressure. Libra may experience professional urgency or conflict with authority.
Scorpio and Pisces can use Mars in Cancer constructively for travel, creativity, romance, education and meaningful action. Taurus and Virgo may benefit through communication, friendship and collaboration.
The difficulty is that Mars in Cancer can act through defensiveness instead of directness. People may react to the current situation using emotional evidence gathered years ago, which is how a small disagreement about weekend plans suddenly finds itself responsible for everything that happened in 2018.
Mars squares Neptune on August 17, creating a cautionary window around energy, motivation, unclear motives, passive aggression and overestimating how much the body can do. This can be physically draining or emotionally confusing.
Rest before assuming you have lost your ambition. Ask direct questions before inventing motives. Avoid rescuing people who have not asked for rescue, and be careful about acting from guilt, fear or a desire to prove loyalty.
Mars approaches a square with Saturn at the end of August, exact on September 1, so the final days of the month may contain delays, frustration or an irritating encounter with reality. The answer is pacing, not force.

August 12 Total Solar Eclipse and New Moon in Leo: The Day the Light Disappears
The New Moon on August 12 occurs at 20°02 Leo at 1:36 p.m. EDT, which is:
- 12:36 p.m. CDT
- 11:36 a.m. MDT
- 10:36 a.m. PDT
- 9:36 a.m. AKDT
- 7:36 a.m. HST
- 5:36 p.m. in Reykjavík
This New Moon is also a total solar eclipse.
Astronomically, the greatest eclipse occurs about eleven minutes after the exact New Moon. The path of totality crosses northern Russia, Greenland, western Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a tiny part of Portugal. Other parts of Europe, Canada, northwestern Africa and sections of the northern United States will experience a partial eclipse.
For me, living in Iceland this month makes the event feel anything but theoretical. Reykjavík sits inside the path of totality, with total darkness expected to begin at approximately 5:48 p.m. local time and last about one minute, weather permitting.
One minute does not sound long until the Sun disappears in the middle of the afternoon.
Then it sounds enormous.
The rest of Iceland will experience varying conditions, with some western locations receiving longer totality while areas outside the narrow path see a very deep partial eclipse. The scientific reality alone is dramatic enough. Daylight changes, temperatures can drop, shadows sharpen, animals may react, the horizon can glow in every direction and the Sun’s corona becomes visible around the dark Moon.
Please use proper eclipse eye protection. Ordinary sunglasses are useless for this purpose. ISO-compliant eclipse glasses or correctly fitted solar filters are required during every partial phase. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need suitable front-mounted solar filters. Only observers standing within the path of totality may look without eclipse glasses during the brief period when the Sun’s bright surface is completely covered, and the glasses must go back on immediately when sunlight begins returning.
Astrologically, the symbolism is almost painfully perfect.
The Sun rules Leo. Leo is the sign of light, identity, visibility, courage and the creative self. During a total solar eclipse in Leo, the physical light disappears.
The spotlight goes out.
The audience becomes irrelevant.
The usual reference point vanishes.
What remains is the self beneath the performance.
This eclipse may expose where confidence has depended on applause, where ambition has become an attempt to outrun insecurity, where a relationship has required constant performance, or where creativity has been postponed until someone guarantees it will be admired.
It can also begin powerful chapters involving leadership, children, fertility, romance, art, visibility, business, branding, personal reinvention, courage and the decision to live with more heart.
Leo and Aquarius will feel this most directly, especially those with planets or angles around 15 to 25 degrees of the fixed signs. Taurus and Scorpio are also strongly activated and may experience turning points involving home, career, identity, relationships or public direction.
Aries and Sagittarius may experience this eclipse through creativity, romance, travel, education or publishing. Gemini and Libra may receive openings involving communication, friends, networks and long-term plans. Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces may experience deeper changes around money, rest, trust, health, work and emotional closure.
This is a South Node eclipse, which means the beginning may arrive through subtraction.
A position may end because a more honest direction is opening. A creative idea may return after the need to impress people disappears. A relationship may change when one person stops performing emotional perfection. A leader may discover that authority and attention are not the same thing.
The eclipse is not asking, “How can you become more impressive?”
It is asking, “What would you choose if impressing people stopped being the requirement?”

What to do around the solar eclipse
Use the period from August 10 to August 14 to observe, simplify and stay flexible.
Helpful choices include:
- Notice which identity or role feels exhausted
- Write down what you want without demanding an immediate timeline
- Leave space for information you do not have yet
- Protect your schedule from unnecessary drama
- Reduce public pressure while a private truth becomes clearer
- Back up important files and confirm travel arrangements
- Pay attention to new invitations, ideas and conversations
- Rest if your nervous system feels unusually activated
- Choose courage without manufacturing urgency
What to avoid
Try not to:
- Force a major decision simply because the day feels significant
- Make an impulsive public announcement from anger
- Treat attention as proof that something is aligned
- Turn one emotional reaction into a permanent conclusion
- Promise more than you can realistically deliver
- Demand that another person give you certainty they do not have
- Stare at the Sun without certified protection
- Assume every inconvenience is a prophetic sign
Traditional New Moon rituals can still be used, but eclipse intentions should remain spacious. Write what you want to move toward, then allow the route to surprise you.
The Moon Intentions section will help you work with this lunation without treating manifestation like a hostage negotiation with the universe.
The Perseids Peak Beside the Eclipse: Apparently the Sky Wanted a Full Production
The Perseid meteor shower peaks around the night of August 12 into August 13, close to the New Moon, which means dark lunar conditions will support meteor viewing where weather and local twilight allow.
The total eclipse and a major meteor shower peaking on the same date give August 12 an extraordinary astronomical quality. The total eclipse will be visible only from a narrow path, while the Perseids can be observed from much wider areas under dark, clear skies.
This does not add a separate astrological transit, but it certainly adds atmosphere.
Readers can follow the practical skywatching details through Mia Astrology’s Astronomical Events section, especially if planning travel or viewing from Iceland, Spain, Canada or the northern United States.
August 15 to August 17: Big Ideas Meet the Need for an Actual Plan
Mercury conjuncts Jupiter in Leo on August 15, creating a strong window for ideas, announcements, learning, publishing, teaching, performance, presentations and conversations about growth.
Confidence rises. Possibilities look larger. A message may travel further than expected. Someone may receive encouraging news, make an important connection or finally understand the scale of an opportunity.
The caution is exaggeration. Mercury and Jupiter love a large vision, but they can accidentally describe an unfinished staircase as a luxury upper-floor experience.
On August 17, Mercury trines Saturn while Venus sextiles Jupiter. These aspects support constructive conversations, mature agreements, relationship repair, realistic planning and turning a promising idea into something usable.
However, Mars squares Neptune on the same day. The mind may be organized while the body feels tired. A relationship may seem warm while a practical situation remains unclear. A plan may be excellent but poorly timed.
Use August 15 to August 17 for thinking, discussing, writing, revising and planning. Avoid forcing action when the information is good but the energy is not.
Jupiter remains in Leo throughout the month, expanding creativity, courage, visibility, leadership and personal expression. If you want to understand how you naturally approach opportunity and growth, explore what your Jupiter sign says about luck and the way life opens up for you.
