Respect is closely related to the qualities each sign is trying to express well.

Respect Is Different From Fear, Approval and Obedience

Some people confuse respect with fear because frightened people often become quiet, agreeable and careful. Silence may look like cooperation, yet it tells you very little about genuine respect.

Other people confuse respect with approval, which creates the belief that somebody cannot respect you while disagreeing with you. Mature respect can survive disagreement because it concerns character, honesty and how the disagreement is handled.

Respect also differs from obedience. A manager can have authority without earning respect, a parent can control a child’s environment without creating trust, and a confident person can dominate a conversation without convincing anyone that their judgment is sound.
