This is the biggest astrological and astronomical day of the week, and one of the defining dates of 2026. A Total Solar Eclipse occurs at the Leo New Moon, temporarily blocking the Sun along a narrow path crossing the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic, northern Spain and a small part of northeastern Portugal.

The astronomical eclipse begins globally at approximately 3:34 PM UTC, totality begins somewhere on Earth at approximately 4:58 PM UTC, greatest eclipse occurs around 5:46 PM UTC and the final partial phase ends globally shortly before 8:00 PM UTC.

For those of us in Iceland, this is not a distant event appearing on somebody else’s livestream. Iceland lies directly in the path of totality. In Reykjavík, the partial eclipse begins at approximately 4:47 PM, totality begins around 5:48 PM and lasts about one minute. Keflavík receives roughly one minute and thirty-nine seconds of totality, while Grundarfjörður receives close to one minute and fifty-two seconds. Ísafjörður receives around one minute and thirty-one seconds.

Certified eclipse glasses conforming to ISO 12312-2 must be used during every partial phase. Only during the brief period of complete totality, when the bright solar surface is fully covered, is it safe to look without them, and the glasses must go back on immediately as the Sun begins reappearing. Ordinary sunglasses, dark plastic, camera filters and improvised solutions do not provide safe protection.

Astrologically, this eclipse occurs at 20°01′ Leo and begins a new cycle involving identity, confidence, creativity, leadership, recognition and the courage to occupy space honestly. Leo asks where we have hidden a talent, performed for approval or built confidence around an audience whose reaction has become far too important.

Eclipses rarely provide a neat list of instructions on the day they happen. They introduce change, reveal pressure and accelerate developments that may require weeks or months to understand. This is why the day is better for observation and simple intentions than for forcing a major manifestation ritual while the lights are literally going out.

The Moon meets Jupiter in Leo before the eclipse and trines retrograde Saturn in Aries, bringing a remarkable combination of expansion and structure. Jupiter makes the potential feel larger, while Saturn asks what can endure. A new opportunity may be real, but its long-term value will depend on whether confidence is supported by discipline.
