Your natal chart remains fixed because it records the sky at your birth, while the transiting planets continue moving through the zodiac, entering new signs, crossing different houses, forming aspects to your natal planets, separating from old contacts, and approaching new ones. When astrologers say that Saturn is transiting your seventh house or Jupiter is trining your natal Sun, they are describing one part of this relationship between the current sky and your birth chart.

Most transit charts are displayed as a bi-wheel. Your natal placements usually appear in the inner wheel, while the transiting planets appear around the outside. The house cusps belong to the natal chart unless the software says otherwise, which means the outer planets are being placed into the houses of your birth chart so you can see which areas of life they are currently moving through.

If the two wheels make your eyes blur together, begin with the simplest possible distinction: the inside describes you, while the outside describes what is moving now. The transit is not replacing your natal chart, rewriting your personality, or announcing that you have become a different zodiac sign until further notice. It is activating parts of the chart you already carry.

This is also why two people can live under the same sky and have completely different experiences, a subject explored in much greater detail in Why the Same Transit Feels Different for Different People, because a planet moving through the current sky is collective, while the house and natal placements it touches are personal.

What is the difference between a natal chart and a transit chart?

Your natal chart describes the underlying structure of your astrology, including the signs occupied by the planets, the houses they rule and inhabit, the aspects they form, and the patterns that remain part of your life across time. A transit chart describes temporary movement around that foundation.

If your natal Moon is in Taurus, a transiting planet does not remove it from Taurus. If you were born with Venus square Saturn, that aspect does not disappear when Venus enters another sign. What changes is the way the current planets stimulate those placements, sometimes gently enough that you barely notice and sometimes with enough precision that a long-standing part of your chart suddenly feels as though somebody turned the lights on and increased the volume.

Think of the natal chart as the house you live in and transits as the people, weather, deliveries, repairs, noise, sunlight, and occasional questionable decisions moving through it. The house still has the same rooms, but a quiet spare room feels very different when Jupiter arrives with four suitcases and an ambitious twelve-year plan.

The four pieces of every transit interpretation

Every personal transit contains four basic pieces: the transiting planet, the natal planet or point being contacted, the aspect between them, and the natal house where the transiting planet is moving.

Suppose transiting Saturn is forming a square to your natal Venus while moving through your tenth house. Saturn describes the current pressure, demand, boundary, responsibility, or process of maturation. Natal Venus describes the part of you connected with love, relating, values, money, pleasure, self-worth, and receptivity. The square describes friction that requires adjustment and active engagement. The tenth house shows that career, authority, reputation, public life, responsibility, or long-term direction provides the setting in which the story is likely to become visible.

That gives you a meaningful sentence before you have predicted a single event: a serious period of professional development may be testing the relationship between ambition, value, money, approval, and what you are willing to commit to for the sake of a public goal.

Perhaps that appears through a demanding promotion, tension between work and a relationship, a financial decision attached to career, a creative project requiring stronger standards, or the uncomfortable discovery that being valued and being useful are not always the same thing. The astrology identifies the ingredients and the pressure point, while the person’s actual life tells you which version is happening.
