That is a much richer question than “what zodiac sign should I marry?”, which is fortunate because astrology would become rather bleak if twelve Rising signs were assigned twelve approved partner types and everybody simply had to hope the correct person happened to be available.
Your Descendant does not dictate the Sun sign of your future spouse, identify one perfect soulmate, guarantee that you will marry somebody with a particular placement, or mean that everyone carrying your Descendant sign will immediately become irresistible to you.
What it does offer is a remarkably useful way of understanding the kind of energy that enters your life through partnership, including qualities you admire, qualities that irritate you, qualities you depend upon, characteristics you may unconsciously expect another person to provide, and parts of yourself that become much easier to recognize once another human being begins reflecting them back to you from three feet away.
And close relationships are very good at reflection.
Friends can go home.
Colleagues can end the meeting.
Acquaintances generally do not know enough about you to locate the truly irritating buttons.
A partner eventually discovers where all the controls are.
That is one reason the Descendant can feel much more accurate after you have actually been through a few significant relationships, because the pattern is not always obvious when you are seventeen and choosing somebody mainly because they are attractive and have remembered to text back.
After enough life, the repetition starts getting interesting.
What is the Descendant in astrology?
The Descendant is one of the four major angles in a natal chart, sitting directly opposite the Ascendant, or Rising Sign, on the western side of the chart.
If your Ascendant is at 12 degrees Aries, your Descendant will be at 12 degrees Libra; if your Rising Sign is Cancer, your Descendant falls in Capricorn, and if you have Virgo Rising, Pisces sits on the opposite side of the axis.
Because these points depend on the time and place of birth, you need an accurate birth time to calculate your Descendant reliably, just as you do when identifying your Rising Sign.
The Descendant is traditionally associated with the 7th house of partnership, which covers committed relationships, marriage, important one-to-one bonds, contracts, cooperation, negotiation, and, rather revealingly, open conflict, because the person standing opposite you can be your partner or your opponent and occasionally manages to audition for both positions before breakfast.
This does not mean the seventh house is the “marriage house” and nothing more, because important business partnerships, long-term clients, collaborators, contractual relationships, and people with whom you enter sustained one-to-one dynamics can all activate this part of the chart.
If the 12 houses in astrology are still relatively new to you, it helps to think of the first and seventh houses as an axis rather than two unrelated compartments, because the Ascendant begins with me, while the Descendant introduces you, and a great deal of adulthood consists of discovering how much of ourselves is only revealed once another person refuses to behave according to the script we privately assigned them.
Why the Descendant is always opposite your Rising Sign
The opposition between the Ascendant and Descendant is not an unfortunate piece of chart geometry that astrologers decided to make psychologically significant after the fact; the two points describe opposite ends of the same relationship between self and other.
Your Rising Sign describes the manner in which you naturally approach life, particularly the qualities you lead with instinctively, while the Descendant describes the complementary energy you encounter across from yourself, which can feel attractive precisely because it contains something your usual way of operating does not emphasize as strongly.
An Aries Rising, for example, may naturally move quickly, decide independently, approach life directly, and develop a strong instinct for taking action, while Libra on the Descendant introduces the opposite questions around cooperation, compromise, perspective, diplomacy, and how a decision changes once somebody else’s needs have to fit inside it.
That does not mean Aries Rising lacks diplomacy or should go shopping for a Libra.
It means relationship repeatedly asks Aries Rising to develop Libra skills.
Cancer Rising may instinctively lead through sensitivity, protection, familiarity, emotional awareness, and intuition, while Capricorn on the Descendant introduces structure, accountability, commitment, practicality, boundaries, and the question of what happens when feelings need to become decisions somebody can actually rely upon.
