Through binoculars, the cluster suddenly becomes far richer.

If you are introducing someone to astronomy, this is one of the first objects I would show them.

The reaction is usually immediate.

The Orion Nebula — M42

As Orion rises earlier through autumn, the Orion Nebula becomes an increasingly attractive late-night target.

Located in Orion’s Sword, M42 is one of the brightest nebulae in the sky and can be detected through binoculars.

A small telescope reveals its glowing structure, while larger instruments can show considerably more detail.

And yes, the Moon will interfere with faint nebulosity early in the week, but M42 is bright enough to remain rewarding under less-than-perfect conditions.

🌍 GLOBAL STARGAZING GUIDE

The Moon phases happen at the same instant worldwide, but meteor visibility, planet altitude, moonrise and the length of darkness depend on your location.

That means a useful astronomy guide needs to do more than tell everyone to look up at 9 PM.

Here is what matters for each region.

🇺🇸 United States

The Hunter’s Moon reaches exact fullness on the evening of October 25 across the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones, while Eastern Time reaches exact fullness shortly after midnight on October 26.

For the Taurids, the late evening and overnight hours are worth trying, especially toward Halloween as the Moon begins leaving longer dark windows.

Northern and central U.S. observers have good access to Taurus, while Andromeda, the Pleiades and the Double Cluster remain excellent autumn targets.

Important clock change: Most of the United States ends daylight saving time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2:00 AM local daylight time, when clocks move back one hour. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe the change.

🇨🇦 Canada

Canada also gets excellent opportunities for the Hunter’s Moon, although local moonrise times vary significantly across the country.

The Taurids are accessible from Canadian latitudes, and the increasingly long nights make autumn astronomy particularly rewarding.

Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Perseus and the Pleiades are beautifully placed.

Most Canadian regions that observe daylight saving time also change their clocks on November 1, though some provinces and communities follow different rules.

And because late October in Canada can become genuinely cold, dress for standing still rather than walking.

Those are two very different temperatures.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

The Hunter’s Moon reaches exact fullness at 4:11 AM GMT on October 26.

The UK has already returned to Greenwich Mean Time on October 25, so remember that astronomical event times need to be converted using GMT rather than BST this week.

The Taurids are well positioned from British latitudes, while Andromeda, the Double Cluster and Pleiades provide excellent binocular targets.

The main challenge remains cloud cover.

As always, the best night is the clear one, not necessarily the date you’ve circled on your calendar.

🇦🇺 Australia

For Australian readers, the Hunter’s Moon reaches exact fullness during the afternoon of October 26, so the most enjoyable viewing comes when the nearly full Moon rises during the evening.

The Taurids are also observable from much of Australia, although the radiant’s altitude differs from northern locations.

Southern Hemisphere observers have their own spectacular deep-sky targets, including the Magellanic Clouds, 47 Tucanae and rich southern star fields.
