The Total Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, blocking part or all of the Sun from our point of view.
During a total solar eclipse, the Moon appears large enough to cover the Sun’s brilliant visible surface completely, but only along a comparatively narrow track on Earth. Everyone outside that track sees either a partial eclipse or no eclipse at all. (NASA Science)
That sounds very neat when written as a scientific definition.
The actual experience is anything but neat.
As totality approaches, the landscape begins to look subtly wrong. The light grows cooler and flatter, shadows sharpen, the temperature may fall and the ordinary afternoon starts behaving like it has quietly lost confidence in itself. Birds may settle, animals may react to the sudden darkness and the horizon can develop sunset-like colours even though the Sun is still technically in the sky.
Then the final bright edge disappears.
For a short period, the Sun becomes a black circle surrounded by its corona, the faint outer atmosphere that is normally overwhelmed by daylight. Bright planets or stars may become visible. The horizon can glow in several directions, and even people who arrived determined to remain sensible often discover that totality has no interest in their emotional restraint.
The global maximum duration is approximately 2 minutes 18 seconds, occurring over the ocean west of Iceland. On the Icelandic mainland, the longest totality is expected at Látrabjarg, lasting approximately 2 minutes 13 seconds. (eclipse2026.is)
Where Will Totality Be Visible?
Totality will not be limited to Iceland and Spain.
The Moon’s central shadow crosses:
- A remote portion of northern Russia
- Parts of Greenland
- Western Iceland
- The Arctic and North Atlantic oceans
- A broad section of northern and eastern Spain
- A very small area of northeastern Portugal

From a travel perspective, however, these locations are not equal.
Northern Russia and much of Greenland are remote and logistically difficult. Portugal receives totality only at the extreme edge of the path, where the duration may be extremely brief and the precise experience can be sensitive to the actual edge of the lunar shadow. Iceland and Spain therefore receive most of the international attention because both offer substantial populated areas inside totality, established tourism infrastructure and many possible viewing locations.
Where Will the Eclipse Be Partial?
A partial solar eclipse will be visible across a far larger region, including:
- Most of Canada
- Parts of the northern United States, extending from Alaska into parts of the eastern United States
- The United Kingdom and Ireland
- Most of Europe
- Scandinavia
- Northwestern Africa
- Parts of the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific regions

A deep partial eclipse can still be beautiful and absolutely worth watching, but even a location where almost the entire Sun is covered does not reproduce the experience of totality. Until the Sun is completely covered, its remaining exposed surface is bright enough to keep the sky illuminated and the corona hidden.
This is also why eclipse glasses remain necessary throughout the entire event in every partial-eclipse location.
Why Iceland Is Such an Extraordinary Place to See It
In Iceland, the path of totality crosses the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, the Reykjavík area and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The Moon’s umbral shadow first reaches the Icelandic mainland in the Westfjords at approximately 5:43 PM local time, passes southward across western Iceland and leaves the mainland at Reykjanestá shortly after 5:50 PM. Totality in the Reykjavík area begins at roughly 5:48 PM and lasts approximately one minute, depending on the exact location. (eclipse2026.is)
The Sun will be about 25 degrees above the southwestern sky in Iceland during totality, which is high enough that observers do not require a perfectly flat sea horizon, although an open view toward the southwest remains important. (eclipse2026.is)
That is a major advantage over many locations in Spain, where the eclipse takes place very close to sunset and the Sun will be much lower.
Iceland’s disadvantage is not difficult to guess.
