Why You Don’t Trust Good Things When They Finally Happen

There is a strangely cruel little plot twist that can happen after you have spent years wanting your life to become calmer, healthier, more secure, more loving, more financially stable, more emotionally straightforward, or simply less exhausting, because sometimes the thing you have been asking for finally arrives and, instead of relaxing into it like the emotionally evolved person you imagined you would become, you immediately start looking around for the trap.

The relationship is going well, so you wonder when it will change.

Work becomes calmer, so you assume something must be coming.

Someone treats you consistently, and instead of thinking, How lovely, a suspicious little committee assembles inside your head and begins investigating why this person is being so nice.

You finally have a week where nobody needs anything dramatic from you, nothing has gone terribly wrong, your phone is not carrying bad news, and there is no obvious emotional fire to put out, yet rather than enjoying the peace, you feel restless enough to check whether you have forgotten something important.

Maybe you even catch yourself thinking the sentence that has ruined many perfectly decent afternoons:

This is going too well.

Which is an astonishing thing to say when you think about it, because presumably the goal was for things to go well.

You wanted peace.

You wanted consistency.

You wanted the person who actually texted back when they said they would.

You wanted the job where Sunday evening did not feel like the opening scene of a psychological thriller.

You wanted enough money in the account that buying groceries did not require advanced mathematics and a small prayer.

You wanted friendships that did not need constant emotional maintenance.

You wanted to stop waking up already braced for the day.

Then some of those things begin happening and your nervous system says, Absolutely not, this seems suspicious.
