Understanding someone is not the same thing as being safe with them

This distinction sounds obvious until you actually need to use it.

You can completely understand why somebody behaves badly and still decide that their behavior is unacceptable in your life.

Both things can be true at once.

Perhaps someone grew up in an emotionally cold household and genuinely struggles to express affection, which may explain why they withdraw whenever intimacy becomes uncomfortable, but their history does not magically transform repeated emotional withdrawal into a healthy relationship for you.

Perhaps someone experienced betrayal and now struggles with trust, which deserves compassion, but that does not mean you must accept constant accusations, invasions of privacy, controlling behavior, or endless suspicion to prove that you are different from whoever hurt them before.

Perhaps somebody’s parents never apologized, so they never learned how to repair conflict properly, which is genuinely sad and may explain why accountability feels threatening to them, but it does not mean you must spend the next decade being hurt by someone who refuses to say, “I was wrong.”

Explanation provides context.

It does not automatically provide permission.

That sentence is worth remembering because empathetic people regularly confuse the two.

You discover the reason behind somebody’s behavior and suddenly the behavior feels less legitimate to object to, as though understanding the source means forfeiting your right to experience the impact.

You tell yourself they cannot help it.

Sometimes that may even be partly true.

They may genuinely struggle.

They may genuinely love you.

They may genuinely wish they behaved differently.

They may genuinely feel terrible afterward.

None of those things guarantee that the relationship is healthy enough for you to remain inside it.

Intent matters.

Impact matters too.

A person can love you and still repeatedly hurt you.

A person can have beautiful qualities and still be incapable of giving you what you need.

A person can be wounded without being ready for a healthy relationship.

A person can be trying and still not be changing.

Those realities are uncomfortable precisely because they do not give us a convenient villain.

Sometimes nobody is evil.

Sometimes something simply is not good enough.

Empathy becomes self-abandonment when everybody gets understood except you

Empathy is one of the most beautiful human abilities because it allows us to look beyond behavior and imagine the inner world of another person, but empathy becomes distorted when you consistently extend understanding outward while refusing to extend the same understanding inward.

Imagine a friend came to you and described your exact relationship.

They tell you they have repeatedly asked their partner to communicate more clearly, but nothing changes.

They tell you promises are made after every argument and forgotten once the immediate crisis passes.

They tell you they feel anxious more often than secure.

They tell you they spend enormous amounts of time wondering whether they are asking for too much.

They tell you they have become smaller, quieter, more careful, and increasingly afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Would you immediately give them a forty-minute lecture about how difficult their partner’s childhood probably was?

Probably not.

You would care about your friend.

You would notice their exhaustion.

You would ask what the relationship is doing to them.

Yet when the exhausted person is you, suddenly everybody else’s psychological history becomes fascinating.

This is one reason Why You Keep Shrinking Yourself Around Certain People is so closely connected to this pattern, because the more energy you spend accommodating another person’s wounds, the easier it becomes to treat your own needs as inconvenient interruptions.

You begin adjusting.

You choose your words carefully.
