The Major Story: A Full Moon Competes With a Meteor Shower

The Moon reaches its full phase on July 29 at approximately 14:36 UTC, which is 2:36 PM in Iceland and 3:36 PM in the United Kingdom during British Summer Time. The exact instant occurs during daylight for those locations, but the Moon will look full on both the evening of July 28 and the evening of July 29, rising around sunset and remaining visible through the night.

In North American seasonal tradition, July’s Full Moon is often called the Buck Moon, referring to the period when new antlers are growing on male deer, although Moon names vary between cultures and should be treated as traditional labels rather than universal astronomical terminology.

A Full Moon is usually treated as a nuisance by deep-sky observers because its scattered light brightens the entire sky, hides faint galaxies and nebulae, and reduces meteor counts. Yet the Moon itself is anything but a consolation prize. Through binoculars, the darker lunar maria become obvious, and even without equipment you can trace the broad contrast between ancient lava plains and brighter highlands. Near the exact full phase, shadows across the central lunar surface are shallow, but the Moon’s outer limb still reveals texture, and the bright ray systems around craters such as Tycho and Copernicus become especially conspicuous.

The timing creates an almost comical challenge for the Southern Delta Aquariids, which reach their predicted maximum around July 30. The shower is steady rather than sharply peaked, so useful activity continues for days on either side of the nominal maximum, but the nearly full Moon means only the brighter meteors are likely to punch through the glare. The correct expectation is therefore not a storm of shooting stars. It is a patient hunt for the survivors.
