Alpha Capricornids: Fewer Meteors, Better Drama

The Alpha Capricornids are also active during this week and reach maximum activity around July 30 or 31. Their hourly rate is low, often only a handful of meteors even under excellent conditions, so nobody should drive into the wilderness expecting the sky to erupt every thirty seconds.

What makes the shower interesting is its reputation for producing slow, bright fireballs. A single Alpha Capricornid can be more memorable than twenty faint meteors because it may cross a large part of the sky with enough brightness to remain visible despite moonlight. The radiant sits in Capricornus, again favouring southerly locations, but bright fireballs can be spotted from a broad range of latitudes.

To distinguish the active showers, mentally trace each meteor’s path backward. A track pointing toward Aquarius is likely a Southern Delta Aquariid, one pointing toward Capricornus may belong to the Alpha Capricornids, and a meteor tracing back toward Perseus in the northeast may be an early Perseid. Random sporadic meteors remain possible too, because the sky has never shown much concern for our desire to label everything immediately.

The Perseids Are Already Warming Up

The Perseid meteor shower is active throughout this week, although its spectacular maximum does not arrive until August 12 into August 13. In 2026 that peak coincides with the New Moon, producing excellent dark-sky conditions, but during July 27 to August 2 the Full Moon dramatically reduces visibility.

Still, the Perseids are known for bright meteors and occasional fireballs, and activity increases as August approaches. Watch after midnight, particularly in the predawn hours when the radiant in Perseus climbs higher in the northeast. Any Perseid seen this week is essentially an opening act for the much larger performance waiting less than two weeks away.
