Deep-Sky Highlights: Work Around the Moon
This is not the week to chase the faintest galaxies from a city balcony while pretending the Full Moon is not there. Choose bright targets that tolerate moonlight, or observe during the earlier part of the evening before the waning Moon rises later in the week.
The Summer Triangle, formed by Vega, Deneb and Altair, is prominent for Northern Hemisphere observers. Albireo in Cygnus is a wonderful small-telescope target, appearing as a contrasting golden and blue double star. The Ring Nebula in Lyra and the Dumbbell Nebula in Vulpecula are possible with a telescope, although moonlight reduces contrast. The Hercules Cluster, M13, remains bright enough to reward binoculars or a small telescope from darker locations.
Southern Hemisphere observers can explore the rich star fields around Scorpius and Sagittarius, where the Milky Way is crowded with clusters and nebulae. The Moon will compromise the faintest detail, but bright objects such as the Jewel Box Cluster and Omega Centauri remain worthwhile where visible.
The practical rule is simple: use the bright Moon for lunar observing while it is above the horizon, then exploit any darker interval before moonrise later in the week for deep-sky work. Astronomy becomes far less frustrating when we stop demanding that every night provide the same kind of sky.
